Celebrating Pride through Advocacy

June marks Pride Month, a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, reflect on the hard-fought progress that has been made, and learn how each of us can contribute to promoting equality, justice, and dignity for all.

As lawyers we are in an incredibly privileged position – we have the ability through our advocacy to effect real, positive change. Look no further than Obergefell v. Hodges (576 U.S. 644), the 2015 landmark Supreme Court case that finally and definitively declared "same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them." The holding came after a decades-long movement fueled by grass-roots organizers and committed advocates. The case was ultimately argued in front of the Court by civil rights attorney Mary L. Bonauto who has been fighting for equality for same-sex couples since 1990. Attorney Bonauto gave a masterclass is oral advocacy, and all law students (especially mooties) would benefit from listening to how to respond to a hot bench with poise and conviction.

At its very best, the legal profession affords lawyers the possibility to advocate for changes that improve the lives of individuals, communities, and our society. The Obergefell ruling means that same-sex couples across the U.S. are guaranteed the protections, privileges, and responsibilities of marriage. For the individual plaintiff couples in the case, it meant the affirmation and dignity of being recognized as a spouse, even in death; the certainty that comes with being a legally-recognized parent; and the security of knowing your marriage license won't evaporate when you cross state lines. Justice Kennedy's recitation of the facts is a reminder that contained within judicial opinions are the stories, pain, struggles, and hopes of real people. Through their advocacy, lawyers have the power to change these stories to be immeasurably better, or irreparably worse. May this month remind us all to wield the power of our words to create a better and more just world - whether arguing in front of the Supreme Court or being mindful of how we behave towards colleagues, clients, and strangers.

Pride is about honoring the strides that have been made and recognizing the immense work left to be done. So, whether you are speaking out to call for respect in every day interactions, learning about ways to support LGBTQ+ causes, working towards preserving progress made, or listening to and elevating LGBTQ+ voices - I wish all productive and joyful Pride Month!
